A New Age
City of plenty, land of wonder. Unshackled from Elharcadian influence and their iron grip on the world’s progress, the city of Elusia has expanded beyond all limitations one could have ever expected. Built upon the ashes of the Red Tear Plague the ten cities of Elusia thrive now unlike any other place on Urth. Such overwhelming progression often comes at a price and more often than not, there are those that believe the price is just too high. A movement among the most impoverished of Elusia is beginning to bring a better tomorrow for those forgotten among the progress.
The history of Elusia is complicated and not altogether understood by most who live in or outside of the city. Originally a collection of ten cities spread out over a small countryside, Elusia existed as a sort of trade capital within the Midlands. The lands which the ten cities were set thrived in very specific enterprises, the land rich with resources. The cities often found conflict with one another, but overall found a way to coexist in such close proximity.
The cities flourished and grew to tremendous proportions until the War of the Demispawn came. The cities themselves made up the largest population center in the world, a place of riches and opportunity. When the war had ended and nearly all people of fighting age or ability had died out came a time of ruin. The cities crumbled without the magic to sustain them, as many of the industries that kept the cities running relied on magic to run efficiently. Large parts of each city were tore down for resources and death tolls are thought to have been great.
A revival of the cities came as magic returned to the land. It’s thought that around 300 years after the fall of the gods that the cities had exceeded the splendor of their former glory. When the Elharcadian Imperial Nation came to the ten cities of Elusia they were met with defiance. While the ten cities did not have a standing military, they openly refused to halt usage of magic and technological advancement. The Elharcadian response was overwhelming as trade from outside was halted by Imperial Nation forces and the Elharcadians sent forces to try and place pressure on the local rulers to adopt their laws.
The biggest difference between Elusia and the rest of the world was in it’s lack of government. The Imperial Nation had very little influence on the rulers of the ten cities as they were not local governments at all. They were comprised of merchant kings who created vast wealth in the trade of goods and exploitation of industry. If the Elharcadian’s managed to convince a local ruler to adopt their ways by force or diplomacy, that “ruler” would simply be trampled over by his local competition and a new ruler would take his place, starting the cycle all over.
The Imperial Nation had their hands full. Most of the world had willingly accepted the aid of the Elharcadians to assist with disaster relief and regulation of the feared dark magics. In the cities of Elusia though, which became isolated as the Imperial Nation kept applying pressure, it was the opposite. Magic flourished and while monsters and disasters struck, each time the peoples of Elusia rebounded, creating stronger magic and technology to continue their progress.
The Red Tear Plague hit fast and it hit hard. There has always been speculation of whether the plague was the result of misuse of magic, as the Elharcadians taught that such disasters struck when magic was misused, or instead if it were some magical curse concocted by the Imperial Nation in order to kill off the rebellious cities. Regardless of how the plague came to be, people grew immensely ill over the course of only a few days. Plague carriers could not help but cry tears of blood, which seeped from their eyes in streams down their cheeks for weeks as the sickness took hold, eventually killing the individual as it weakened them and drained their body of it’s precious fluid. No magic cure came to the people of Elusia, and all attempts to seek the aid of the Elharcadians were rebuffed.
At the first sign of plague the Elharcadians devised a plan. A magical spell unlike any that has been seen before. A magical barrier was placed around the ten cities of Elusia in a large circle. A few points in the barrier were made that could be triggered by select Elharcadian’s to allow passage through, but during the time of the Red Tears the walls were left closed and those within the cities of Elharcadia were left to their own fate.
The plague ruined the majority of the people within the cities of Elusia. Three of every four people died of the plague over the course of a decade, unable to seek aid outside the magically constructed walls of the Imperial Nation. From the ashes of these ruins some did manage to survive, working together to build once more. In the year 1284 AG the last known carrier of the Red Tear Plague died, and since then the cities of Elusia have turned into something far greater than anything the world has known.
The Imperial Nation never brought down the wall, but that didn’t stop the citizens of Elusia from expanding. Unburdened by the High Elven influence the people of Elusia once more expanded their use of magic and technology. By 1510 AG the people of Elusia had magical means of producing food and luxury befitting the rich of other kingdoms and by the early 1700’s all Elusia was nearly double the population that it had been at it’s peak. Advances in steam and coal brought an industrial age of prosperity to Elusia and buildings of brick and steel were twisted to shape buildings and byways from city to city. Massive magic infused trains sped across the short distance between the cities and with the newfound access many residents spread between the cities themselves. By 1922 AG the cities of Elusia were more one solid supermetropolis that stretched to all sides of the magical barrier the Imperial Nation had constructed.
The cities of Elusia faced a new, bigger problem. As magic and technology allowed progress to advance at such an immense rate, the population ran out of places to expand. As resources grew thin, even with the magical aid that existed, the impending collapse of the megacity loomed heavy over it. City fought city, walls were erected at boarders and resources were hoarded in bitter trading disputes. Murder and anarchy began to reign in the common streets among all the cities of Elusia and the long lasting merchant kings of Elusia’s free cities found themselves robbed of their possessions and left penniless.
When things looked ready to implode, a single Gnome brought hope. Lasco Goldweaver, a gnome who had lived his entire life in a small section of a mining district known for it’s coal production brought a power to the world unlike any it had seen before. He had developed it in his own tower at the edge of the city, a massive structure that was created by some long-dead mage in the age of Gods. While fires burned from riots through the city Goldweaver tried his experiment and brought to life the first Blu Reactor.
The Blu Reactor harvested the magical energy of the planet and allowed it to be focused and controlled, bent to the will of the user’s ambition. The magical reactor was the size of a massive tower and glowed a stark light blue as it pumped the energy from the planet. The tower it was housed within crumbled to dust and Goldweaver stood proud. Instead of using this power for some devilish plot, he used it to unite all of the people within Elusia. Famine and hunger were eliminated, water was once more safe to drink, technology was once more advanced and a third age of prosperity fell.
The people rallied behind Lasco Goldweaver and he used this power to unite all ten cities together, renaming the city Elusia-Blu. He ordered the construction of another nine Blu Reactors, one for each former city that were relabeled as numbered districts. These powerful reactors allowed peace to once more come to Elusia and brought it to it’s current state. In tradition of it’s heritage the new Elusia-Blu is dominated by the megamerchant company named Blu, which is involved in all aspects of the current city including government.
Today in the year 2231 AG Blu dominates Elusia. Two hundred years ago the construction of the upper decks was completed, these would become new districts and represented the perfection of Elusia-Blu, controlling all production, manufacture and wealth within Elusia-Blu. The top 10 districts hold nearly 300,000 people and encompass the aspects that run the city such as agriculture, production, mining and other forms of progress. The “lower 10” are also called the “under-districts”. These districts sit beneath the beautiful megascapes above and are generally in poor disrepair. These districts vary wildly, as each was once very successful years ago in one form of commerce or another, but have been nearly forgotten by the city above as the exploitation of “Blu” has developed cheaper, better and faster production in the top 10 districts. Due to that the lower districts are run down, infested with warped creatures and strange beasts or massive slums with uncounted populations that are born and live out their lives in the shadows of the city above. It is estimated that there could be as many as a 800,000 people spread out among the sprawling lower districts, but no census has ever been taken and these days few in the upper districts even know they exist since the government walled off the lower districts nearly 30 years ago, strictly regulating travel back and forth from the lower districts to the upper districts.
On the surface Elusia looks to be a beacon of home to the greater world, a symbol of defiance against the Elharcadians and a model of advanced growth and stability through the world. While the Elharcadians still enforce the outer perimeter of the city and entering or leaving the city is immensely difficult, Elusia stands as a world of it’s own on Urth.
